When fire fighters respond to a fire it is important they can quickly connect to a water supply such as a fire hydrant. Over time hydrant markers can become damaged or go missing and vegetation can impair quick access. The result can be vital time lost in fighting the fire.
Within the Upwey Fire Brigade primary response area there are more than 350 fire hydrants. As you can imagine keeping an eye on all of them is a huge task for the volunteers.
Here’s where you can help us keep our community safe.
If a fire hydrant is located near your property we are hoping you can help us by being part of our Adopt A Hydrant program. All we ask is from time to time you do a quick check of the hydrant based on the acronym W.A.T.E.R.and report any damage, faults or other issues with it to South East Water or the “contact us” page on our web site.
What to key an eye on;
Where is the hydrant? Are pointers, road markers or other signage in place and correctly pointing to the hydrant location?
Access. Is vegetation hiding the hydrant or making access difficult? Is the cover hidden under dirt or a car parked over it?
Take care of it. Keep the access clear by maintaining vegetation and removing other obstructions.
Encasement. Is there a proper cover over the hydrant? Does it appear to be correctly fitted?
Report. Report any faults or issues to South East Water or to us via the “Contact Us” form
